Summer School Attendance Policy

    Attendance Requirements for Summer School
     
    During the regular school year a semester-long course provides 85-90 days of instruction. Summer School courses are condensed into fewer days and longer instructional class periods. Each period during Summer School is the equivalent to 3-4 days of instruction during the regular school year. Attendance and punctuality are essential for academic success in Summer School and is directly connected to the amount of seat time required by the State to receive high school course credits over the summer.

    Teachers take attendance for each scheduled class period. Students are expected to be present and on time for all classes. Summer School attendance records are legal documents that are monitored for accuracy. ALL absences count towards the attendance policy. Course credit is given based on the number of hours a student is in class. We do not make exceptions.  
     

    Summer School operates a two-period daily schedule over 26 days. Summer School is divided into two 13-Day sessions; Session 1 and Session 2. Courses for credit can be taken in one of the following formats:

    • 13-Day, 1-credit courses meet for two class periods each day from 8:00am-1:35pm. The schedule includes two 10-minute breaks, one during each period and a 30-minute lunch break. Students must attend a minimum of 12 days of class to earn credit. The last day of class is required.
    • 26-Day, 1-credit courses meet for one class period, either 8:00-10:30am (1st period) -OR- 11:05am-1:35pm (2nd period). The schedule includes one 10-minute break during each period. Lunch is available from 10:30am-11:00am. Students must attend a minimum of 24 days of class to earn credit. The last day of class is required.
    • 26-Day, 2-credit courses meet for two class periods each day from 8:00am-1:35pm. The schedule includes two 10-minute breaks, one during each period and a 30-minute lunch break. Students must attend a minimum of 24 days of class to earn both credits. The last day of class is required.

     

    Summer School Absences

    There are no excused absences during summer school. Students should attend all days, including the full block on the last day of their course(s). The Summer School Attendance Policy details how tardies and absences impact course credit. Review the policy for that information as well as how to report an absence (for example, in an emergency). If your student does not meet the attendance requirements, they will not receive credit and no refund will be given.

    The last day of class in Summer School Session 1 and Summer School Session 2 are full days of class and attendance is required. A student who is absent on the last day of class in the Summer School session for which they are enrolled will not be allowed to take the final exam and will be recorded as “not in attendance” and will receive a failing grade of “F” by default. Final exams will not be given early. No credit or refund will be given.  

     

    Tardiness Type Definition Consequence
    Tardy (T) Student arrives to class after the bell and less than 5 minutes. 6 Tardy codes equal one class period of absence
    Unauthorized Tardy (UT)
    Student arrives to class more than 5 minutes after the bell and less than 30 minutes late.
    		 3 UT codes equal one class period of absence
    Extreme Tardy (ET)
    Student arrives to class more than 29 minutes after the bell. Even though an absence will be issued, students should plan to attend their classes since attendance is taken by period.
    		 1 ET code equals one class period of absence
     
    Absence Reporting for Summer School

    Parents and students  need to call the Summer School office (847) 424-7950 NOT the regular Attendance Office line, if there is an emergency or if a student will be absent for summer school. If an absence occurs, students should contact their teacher(s) to obtain information and work that was missed.

    Make-Up Work

    Students should expect a significant amount of in-school work and a reasonable amount of homework. Since there are no excused absences in summer school, students will need to consult with their teacher regarding make-up work for full or partial credit. Teachers are not allowed to schedule time for students to make up absences by spending extra time with the teacher. While students are encouraged to talk with their teachers to make up missed assignments, the time spent obtaining support or obtaining missing work will not replace an absence. Missed assignments should be turned in immediately upon returning to school.
