The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law in December 2015. The purpose of the law is to ensure that each child is able to meet the learning standards of the state where the child lives. States are required to establish long-term goals for student achievement, high school graduation rates, and English language proficiency with measurements of interim progress.  Specific goals of the ESSA include:

• Advance equity by upholding critical protections for America's disadvantaged and high-need students.
• Require all students be taught to high academic standards that will prepare them to succeed in college and careers.
• Ensure vital information is provided to educators, families, students, and communities through annual statewide assessments that measure students' progress toward those high standards.
• Help support and grow local innovations, including evidence-based and place-based interventions developed by local leaders and educators.
