World Languages Placement Testing

    • WL Placement Testing for All Students
      911ÖÆÆ·³§ offers many different World Languages (American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Spanish/ Spanish for Heritage Learners). Students may elect to take any language during the course request timeframe for each school year.  Students with no experience in the language will be placed in level 1.

    • Students entering 911ÖÆÆ·³§ with 2 years of experience at their current middle school will be placed in level 2.  If students are looking for a course with more rigor, they should .  Students are not testing to place into level 2 honors.  That will be assessed once the following school year begins.

    • WL Placement Testing for Incoming 8th Grade Students
      in November.  Only students with non-traditional language experience (immersion, heritage, living abroad) will take a placement test. 

      • Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish - Students with Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish (as a foreign language) will take the to measure proficiency in the language.  Students will take the Interpretive Listening, Interpretive Reading, and Presentational Writing test.  This is a computer-based test; all three sessions will take about 2 hours.  Once students sign up, we will send more specific information home about technical requirements and test-taking tips.

      • American Sign Language - Students with ASL experience should contact the World Languages Office, DeptChair_WorldLanguages@eths202.org to arrange for placement testing.

      • Latin - Due to the sequential nature of the Latin curricula offered at Baker and Pope John, students with Latin experience who are currently enrolled at those schools will be placed based on teacher recommendation. They do not need to take a placement test at 911ÖÆÆ·³§.  Students with Latin experience from other schools should fill out to provide background with language experience.

      • Spanish Heritage Learners - Students who are from a home where Spanish is spoken are eligible for Spanish for Heritage Learners classes at 911ÖÆÆ·³§. For District 65 students, this would include, but is not be limited to, the students enrolled in Spanish for Spanish Speakers classes.  

          • Students with no formal Spanish classes will be placed in Spanish 1 for Heritage Learners.

          • The Spanish Heritage test will be administered remotely this year.  Students will take the to measure proficiency in the language.  Students will take the Interpretive Listening, Interpretive Reading, and Presentational Writing test.  This is a computer-based test; all three sessions will take about 1 and a half hours.  Once students sign up, we will send more specific information home about technical requirements and test-taking tips.

          • Students in 8th grade Spanish for Spanish Speakers (SSS)  at Nichols, Chute, and Haven will take the AAPPL Spanish placement exam in their SSS classes in early November. 

            • These scores will be used only to determine a higher placement than the default placement of Spanish Heritage 2 or Spanish 2. 

            • Any other Students, not in SSS, who wish to place higher in a World Language Course, must fill out this and they will take the AAPPL exam remotely between 11/9-11/17. 

    • If a student wishes to take a placement exam after the November dates, please refer them to the World Languages Office, DeptChair_WorldLanguages@eths202.org, to schedule an exam. 

    • WL Placement Testing Results for Incoming Freshmen
      As part of the course request process, incoming freshmen will attend Course Request Night where they indicate their elective and alternate course requests.

      Course request information, including placements in all classes, electives, and alternates, will be sent to incoming families prior to Course Request Night. For questions related to the placement level for a language course, contact the World Languages Office after receiving your information and prior to the
      course request change deadline.

    • WL Placement Testing for Transfer Students
      As transfer students register at 911ÖÆÆ·³§ and take required placement testing, students who are entering 911ÖÆÆ·³§ with prior language experience (in middle school, at home, through private lessons, etc.) need to be tested to determine the best language level for them. Factors that influence level determinations include prior course experience, placement test results, teacher recommendation, and grades. Families should work with the Registrar’s Office to set up testing for World Languages.


    Make-Up Testing
    If a student wishes to take a placement exam after the November dates, please refer them to the World Languages/Multilingual Services Office, DeptChair_WorldLanguages@eths202.org, to schedule an exam.
